Milbrandt lab researcher takes new position at Novartis

Bryan McGill, an Instructor of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine and a member of the Milbrandt lab, has taken a new position at Novartis.

“It was a really difficult decision to leave Washington University. The deciding factor for me was the opportunity to work full-time on clinical research full-time investigating treatments for pediatric neurologic disorders,” he said.

Bryan will be working as a medical director in clinical development at AveXis, a subsidiary of Novartis. The position will be in suburban Chicago, where the clinical development team is based. His job will involve some travel between there, production facilities in Chicago and North Carolina, and R&D facilities in California. As the clinical trial rolls out Bryan may travel to the hospitals where the research will be conducted.

The AveXis team is focused on delivering effective treatments for neurologic disorders. The team designs clinical trials of new pharmaceuticals, and provides medical and scientific oversight of those trials as they are conducted.

Bryan is “excited to learn the brand new set of skills (needed) to develop these therapeutics” but sad to leave the Washington University community, he said.

“I will miss my patients and their families. I will miss the coworkers with whom I have built relationships over the last decade. I will miss teaching students, residents, and fellows. I will miss the view of downtown from 12 East Room 9 at Children’s Hospital at sunrise,” Bryan said. “I see this job as an opportunity to fast forward my research career to the point where it is translating back into humans.”

Bryan will be missed. We wish him the best of luck!
